Choose You! Reignite Your Passion for Life
“’Choose you’ is about putting yourself first. For a lot of people, when they hear that they have a visceral reaction, that it sounds or feels selfish and is not the way to approach life. I think that when you put yourself first you actually have the opportunity to improve your work performance, your personal productivity improves, your relationships are more gratifying, and you can improve your health.”
Why Is This Important?
“I would argue that not putting yourself first is actually selfish. Because, when you don’t put yourself first, you run out of gas faster, you run out of steam. It’s critical to put yourself first because that lays the foundation for everything else that you touch. Think about it, have you ever gotten a call from someone who needed help, and you really didn’t want to do it, but you did it anyway? Chances are, you half-did the job, you weren’t your best.”
What Are the Key Lessons Learned Here?
“When you can start to say no and feel comfortable about it, you are choosing you. You’re starting to put your needs first. If I say no to your agenda, because it may not fit what I need to do, then I can say yes to myself. And that’s a strategy for putting yourself first. I encourage people throughout my book to think about the things that are important to them—to think about their values, their concerns, what’s important to them—and operate out of that.”
